Text 27 Jan 1 note Home gym equipment choices

Setting up a home gym can be a grind considering some major factors that go into the setup phase.  First, you have to look at what space is available to determine what equipment will be there.  Second, determining a budget (and sticking to it) is not as easy as it sounds given the prices of certain items.  And lastly, what exactly should you buy to go into your gym?

I am not sure how much space people have in their homes to devote to a gym.  A good strategy to have is to first measure out the square feet of the space available. From there you can fill up half the room with equipment.  A small area would not fit a treadmill all that well.  On the other hand, a larger room should not have most of its space taken up with several pieces of cardiovascular equipment and rows of dumbbells.

That leads us to a budget and how much you are looking to spend.  A good treadmill will probably set you back about $1000 to $1500.  I feel there is a better way to spend $1500 on equipment.  Let’s break it down:

  1. An exercise mat - $16
  2. 3 foot long, round foam roller - $25
  3. Stretch strap - $17
  4. Set of mini-bands - $13
  5. Core wheel - $13
  6. TRX suspension trainer - $200
  7. Powerblock adjustable dumbbells - $600
  8. 8 foot long slideboard - $460
  9. Flat bench - $180
  10. Airex balance pad - $60

The total cost comes out to $1584.  Not bad considering the variety of equipment and the fact that you can now put together a good workout focusing on proper stretching, warm-up, core training, strength and conditioning. Sounds like a better deal than the one-dimensional treadmill.
